12-Week Songwriting Workshop
for Teens & Adults (14+)
Sign Ups Open!
Mondays 7:30-8:30pm Begins August 11th, 2025
Join our 12-Week Songwriting Workshop - Coming this August!

Aspiring songwriters aged 14 and up are invited to embark on a transformative musical journey with the 12-Week Songwriting Workshop! Whether someone is picking up a pen for the first time or has been writing songs for years, this class offers a supportive, creative space to master the art of songwriting. Minimal musical knowledge is welcomed and the ability to play an instrument is not required. All that’s needed is a notebook, pencil, and an open mind.
Led by experienced instructor Corey, this workshop draws inspiration from a college-level commercial songwriting curriculum, blending structured techniques with boundless creativity. Participants will explore classic song forms while learning practical tools to craft lyrics and pair them with chords. By the end of the course, each student will create a portfolio of at least 4 original songs.

What Participants Will Experience
Corey’s approach ensures that everyone, from complete beginners to seasoned songwriters, gains valuable skills. For those newer to music, the workshop provides a clear, accessible pathway to writing songs—requiring as little as knowledge of three chords to succeed. For experienced musicians, the course introduces historical songwriting methods and formulaic structures that can spark fresh creativity, even for those who’ve been writing songs their entire lives. Corey has been writing songs since he was a kid, but when he took this course in college, it introduced him to formal methods he had never considered, making his work more satisfying.
Participants will:
-
Master Songwriting Fundamentals: Learn classic song structures through weekly exercises, listening examples, and group discussions.
-
Unlock Lyrical Creativity: Engage in innovative exercises like freewriting , rhyming challenges and more to spark inspiration and to uncover “golden nuggets” of lyrics.
-
Build a Portfolio: Create at least 4 original songs, each applying different techniques, to develop a tangible body of work.
-
Collaborate and Grow: Work with peers in a supportive environment to co-write songs, share ideas, and celebrate each other’s progress.
-
Learn to Break the Rules: Master the basics of songwriting so participants can confidently bend or break these rules to create something truly unique.

Corey emphasizes that songwriting can feel intimidating, but simple boundaries make it accessible: If you apply a few rules, it’s so much easier to get started. It’s like picking one task from a to-do list—just start, and then the creativity flows. The workshop’s exercises, like freewriting, tap into the brain’s creative plasticity, helping participants uncover unexpected ideas and build confidence. Even “silly” songs are celebrated, as some of the best songs are just that.

Student Songwriters Showcase
The 12-Week Songwriting Workshop concludes with a Student Songwriters Showcase on November 5, 2025, held in our in-house venue: The Brite Room. This celebratory event invites participants to share one or all of their original songs, spotlighting the unique body of work created during the course. Modeled after a writing class portfolio presentation, the showcase highlights each student’s growth and creative journey. Not a performer? No worries! Songs can be brought to life by a fellow student, instructor Corey, a friend, or through software like GarageBand, guaranteeing everyone has a way to shine.
Recognizing that songwriting can feel deeply personal, the showcase is entirely optional, ensuring a pressure-free experience. For those eager to participate, the event fosters a warm, “cheerleader-style” atmosphere where students uplift one another and build confidence.
Why This Workshop Stands Out
This workshop is designed to make songwriting approachable and rewarding for all. Beginners will find a welcoming environment to explore music, while experienced songwriters will discover new tools to refine their craft. Corey aims to equip participants with a versatile toolkit, empowering them to write songs with greater ease now and in the future. With only 8 students per class, participants receive personalized guidance and build a tight-knit community where everyone supports each other’s creative journey.
The course’s structure—modeled after a college-level curriculum—provides a balance of discipline and freedom. Participants practice fundamentals to build confidence, then learn how to “throw paint on the house” by breaking rules creatively. When Corey took this course, he wrote eight songs, only one of which he still plays today, but mastering this toolkit has greatly enhanced his songwriting and continues to guide his creative process.
